Dragons slip past Walsh

Sorin Navrotchi claimed a three-set battle Saturday to lift Tiffin to a 5-4 men’s tennis win against Walsh University.

Navrotchi’s 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 win came at No. 6 singles for the Dragons (13-4, 4-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference).

Luis Ludena and Toby Cutting captured an 8-4 No. 1 doubles win for TU, and Augustin Mangone and Elio Lezama Perez won 8-2 at No. 2. Justin Kopronica and Navrotchi fell 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.

Lezama (6-3, 6-0) and Cutting (6-0, 6-3) both won their singles matches, while Mangone (6-1, 6-4), Kopronica (6-4, 7-6) and Ludena (4-6, 6-2, 7-6) lost.

HU can’t hold early lead

NEW CONCORD — Heidelberg grabbed a quick 2-0 lead, but Muskingum countered in a big way Saturday to claim an 18-3 Ohio Athletic Conference lacrosse win and keep the Student Princes winless.

Anna Winnicki scored two minutes into the game and Dana Dudley added another goal two minutes later to put Heidelberg (0-6, 0-2 OAC) up 2-0, but Muskingum scored the next 11 goals and entered halftime up 11-3.

The Muskies (5-6, 1-1) then shut out Heidelberg 5-0 in the second half.

Dudley had Heidelberg’s third goal, finding the net with 4:15 left in the opening period.

Janessa Scott made nine saves in the loss.

Muskies bottle up Student Princes

Muskingum entered halftime up by six goals and kept Heidelberg in check from there Saturday to claim a 13-7 Ohio Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse win.

Ian McGougan scored five goals for the Muskies (4-4, 1-1 OAC), Tucker Haas dished three assists and Phillip Dappen stopped 15 shots.

The Student Princes (2-7, 0-2) got two goals and an assist from Patrick McCarthy and another two goals from Matt Wernerspach. Owen Carter, Eli Haire and Nick Selfridge also each scored.

Tyler Hammack made 12 saves for Heidelberg.

Heidelberg salvages split with Mount Union

Stellar pitching and tighter defense helped Heidelberg upend Mount Union 3-2 in the second game to earn a split in Ohio Athletic Conference softball Saturday.

Mount Union doubled up the Student Princes 10-5 in the first game, thanks to a three-run burst in the top of the fifth and five more runs in the seventh.

Morgan Riley singled in a run and Jessica Calhoun and Brooke Cox both lifted sac flies to help the Purple Raiders turn a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead in the fifth inning of the opener.

Heidelberg got within 5-4 in the sixth when Randi Kelsey singled in Bailey Smith, but Mount Union responded in a big way in the seventh to keep the Student Princes at bay.

Erin Chapman (6-3) took the loss for Heidelberg.

Casey Moore went 3 for 4 with a homer, triple, three runs and two RBIs. Kaitlyn Moore added a double, single and RBI. Smith singled twice.

Cox ended with two doubles, three runs and an RBI for Mount Union. Emily Hume tripled, singled and scored, Brittany Baitt drove in two runs with two singles, Riley ended 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs and Jordan Kramer went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, a run and a double.

Allie Scali (3-7) got the win.

The second game stayed close throughout.

Kaitlyn Moore dominated from the circle for Heidelberg, taking a no-hitter into the sixth before Brittany Baker singled. Logan Lehman added an RBI double later in the inning to get Mount Union within 3-2, but Heidelberg’s defense clamped down.

A fly out to center turned into a double play when Heidelberg gunned down a baserunner trying to reach third to end the inning.

Kaitlyn Moore then retired the Purple Raiders in order in the seventh to preserve the win.

Meanwhile, Katilin Keys led off the third with a double for Heidelberg (13-7, 3-1 OAC), went to third on Taylor Hicks’ sac bunt and scored on Renee Lovett’s single for a 1-0 lead.

Mount Union (8-12, 2-2) tied the game in the fifth by combining a walk, sac bunt and error, but the Student Princes answered in the bottom of the inning. Hicks singled and Lovett followed with a grounder to second, Hicks backpedaled to avoid the tag and the throw to first went high, allowing both to be safe. Erin Chapman and Smith followed with RBI singles.

Mount Union blanks ‘Berg

ALLIANCE — Mount Union dominated every contest Saturday en route to beating Heidelberg 9-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference tennis.

Rob DeMarco beat Benjamin Moore 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Jackson Schneider dropped Porus Shroff 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2, Jeff Williams blanked Dan Driscoll 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, Robert Cross shut out Paul Claymier 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4, Zach Teffner upended Tate Schoen 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5, and Kyle Hicken beat Alex Sprague 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.

DeMarco and Schneider gave the Purple Raiders (8-3) an 8-2 No. 1 doubles win against Moore, and Shroff.

Williams and Cross beat Driscoll and Claymier 8-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Matt Bringman and Teffner defeated Student Princes (1-6) Schoen and Sprague 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
