Fliers cap dominating run to SBC crown, Calvert finishes seventh

PORT CLINTON – The title was locked up Thursday. Saturday was all about by how much.

Clyde capped an unbeaten run through Sandusky Bay Conference regular season by claiming four of the five event titles at the conference tournament Saturday en route to the overall championship.

Teams received 10 points for each SBC win during the season, which were added the points earned at the tournament.

Tournament points amounted to 10 for each first place, eight for second, seven for third, etc., going down to one point for ninth.

Clyde scored 47 points at the tournament and ended with 137 overall after going 9-0 in SBC play during the regular season.

Sandusky Perkins and Port Clinton tied for second overall with 110 points, followed by Fremont St. Joe (77), Huron (64), Oak Harbor (61), Calvert (42), Sandusky St. Mary (9) and Vermilion (3).

The Fliers were seldom pushed in Saturday’s matches.

Melissa Laconis beat Serena Bruno 6-1, 6-0 for the No. 2 singles title, and Maddie St. Marie dropped Fremont St. Joe’s Lauren Klaege 6-1, 6-0 for the No. 3 singles crown.

Fliers Addie Martin and Alayna Barrera defeated Maria Schoder and Karina Haycook of Perkins 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 1 doubles title, while Alicia Klohn and Bree Dowling beat Port Clinton’s Emma Eickert and Bailey Cole 6-1, 6-3 for the No. 2 doubles title.

Iga Makal added a third at No. 1 singles for Clyde be defeating Calvert’s Laura Hayley 6-2, 6-3.

Bradlee Warnement added a seventh at No. 2 singles for Calvert by beating Oak Harbor’s Christine Bolen 8-2. Marie Brodman ended eighth at No. 3 singles after losing 8-2 to Edison’s Emily Vogus.

Senecas Maria Goshe and Devyn Warnement thumped Sandusky St. Mary’s Miranda Braden and Mary Kromer 8-1 to take ninth at No. 1 doubles.
