Prep Roundup: Quick start lifts Carey past Wynford

BUCYRUS – Shortly into Carey’s game Saturday against Wynford, the only question would be if the Blue Devils could hit the century mark. They didn’t quite get that high, calling off the dogs in the second half in an 80-41 victory. Carey led 27-4 at the first stop and 50-19 at halftime.

Two Blue Devils topped 20 points as Jared Wentling scored 29 and Bryan Powers added 24. Zach Boes chipped in 14.

Carey upped its mark to 6-2 while Wynford fell to 3-5.

Strong start lifts St. Wendelin

FOSTORIA – Led by Peter Campbell’s 29 points, St. Wendelin was able to take a 17-8 first quarter lead and was able to maintain that lead defeating Ridgemont 54-47. Campbell was 7 of 8 from the free throw line and led the team in rebounds with six.

Nick Root added 11 points and and four rebounds, while Gabe Walters added seven points for the Mohawks (3-4).

Rams line up win over FHS

FOSTORIA – Upper Sandusky scored a big chunk its points from the foul line Saturday in a 67-31 win over Fostoria.

The Rams (6-3) went 29 for 39 at the stripe en route to the win. Cody Clifford’s 19 points paced Upper Sandusky and Brad Roeder and Wes Vent both popped in 13.

Drew Stennett scored 10 points for the Redmen (2-6), who managed only a 2-for-9 showing on foul shots.

H-L wins twice on Alumni Night

BASCOM – Elijah Bustillos earned two pins and five teammates each added two wins Saturday as Hopewell-Loudon cruised to pair of victories at its inaugural Chieftain Alumni Night.

The Chieftains thumped New London 54-9 and Buckeye Central 54-7, with Bustillos’ two pins at 195 pounds setting the tone.

Chet Swartmiller (113), Dylan Hammond (120), Mateo Muniz (132), Alex Brock (138) and Damion Vitt (145) also each added two wins for H-L.

More than 50 H-L wrestling alumni attended, some from as far away as New York.

Rough waters for TC, Calvert

FREMONT – Columbian and Calvert’s boys and girls swam at the eighth annual Daniel H. Lease Little Giant Invitational. Neither Columbian nor Calvert’s boys or girls had any individual winners.

Columbian’s boys finished eighth with 227 1/2 points.

Chris Gates took fourth in the 200 free (1:54.4) and third in the 100 backstroke (59.51), while Braden Kuhn ended fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.75) for the Tornadoes.

Gates and Kuhn were both part of Columbian’s runner-up finish in the 200 medley relay (1:50.06) along with Nate Ramsdell and Isaac Lewis.

Gates, Kuhn and Lewis all joined Justin Schwartz to finish third in the 200 free relay (1:37.35).

Calvert’s boys placed 15th with six points.

Columbian’s girls ended ninth with 123 points. Natalie Howard swam third in the 100 butterfly (1:05.2) for the Tornadoes.

Calvert’s girls came in 12th with 95 points. Corinne Harris finished second in the 200 free (2:06.58) for the Senecas.
