Prep Roundup: Calvert tennis takes second at Fostoria Invitational
FOSTORIA – On the strength of a pair of runner-up finishes, Calvert earned second overall at the Fostoria Invitational.
Fostoria placed sixth, while Oregon Clay took first at the event.
In the singles tournament, Calvert’s Madison Daniel finished second, beating Ottawa-Glandorf’s Haley Recker 6-0, 6-2, then slipping past Springfield’s Silvva Caniglia, 6-0, 6-2.
In the final, Daniel fell to Bluffton’s Maggie Felt, 6-0, 7-5.
Calvert’s other second came in third doubles, where Kerrigan Kwiat and Cassie Recker went 2-1.
Kwiat and Recker started their day by beating O-G’s Kristen Ellerbeck and Elsa Redman. The duo then beat Bluffton’s Dynasty Martin and Justine Mitchell, 6-1, 6-3, before losing to Clay’s Jenn Lucas and Rachel Nelson, 6-1, 6-1.
In the second doubles, Margaret Bowers and Samantha Gase received a bye into the second round, but fell 6-3, 6-4 to Springfield’s Solli Sanders and Haley Baxter.
Bowers and Gase rebounded to take third by topping Ottawa-Glandorf’s Alyssa Schnipke and Alexis Haselman, 8-0.
Calvert’s first doubles team of CeCi Burtis and Lauren Haley finished fifth, losing to Clay’s Cassidy Calighlin and Bailey Calighlin, 6-0, 6-2, before beating Fostoria’s Erica Moore and Autumn Affholder, 8-0.
TC gets pair of 4ths at NOL
Columbian got a pair of fourths at the Northern Ohio League Tournament.
Sarah Guzowski finished fourth at first singles, defeating Bellevue’s Mandee Derr in the first round, 6-1, 6-1, then losing to Norwalk’s Sara Stoll, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (9-7). In consolations, Guzowski lost to Katie Boor 9-7.
The Tornadoes’ other fourth came from third singles player Tiffany Walker, who beat Sandusky’s Morgan Spencer, 6-3, 6-3, before losing to Norwalk’s Karlee Talkington, 6-2, 6-1. In the consolation match, she lost to Willard’s Jamee Tuttle, 8-6.
TC’s second singles player, AnnMarie Petrosino lost her only match to Shelby’s Macie Dechert, 6-0, 6-1. In first doubles, Columbian’s Ashley Niedermier and Sam Krintzline lost to Bellevue’s Bernadette Wolfe and Elaina Eskins, 6-2, 6-2, in their only match.
The Tornadoes’ doubles team of Julianne Peacock and Kristina Talbot-Koehl played one match, losing to Claire Yetzer and Elaina Myers.
Columbian takes a whack at it
NORWALK – Columbian placed 17th during the Norwalk Invite at Eagle Creek.
T.J. Wickham shot an 88 for the Tornadoes, followed by Wesley Henkel’s 94 and Eline Widman’s 95.
Warriors finish seventh
HARPSTER – Mohawk’s Chet Margraf shot an 84 and Braydon Dunlap had an 85 to help the Warriors end seventh at the Ridgedale Invitational at Hickory Grove
Billy Dunlap backed them with a 97.
Rams get Upper hand
UPPER SANDUSKY – Upper Sandusky’s Sarah Rall had three goals Saturday, and Upper Sandusky got its sixth win of the season.
The Rams scored twice in each half and blanked the Blue Streaks, 4-0.
Rall assisted on the fourth goal off a corner kick knocked in by Sierra Carey. Kayci Snow and Jaime Calvin added assists.
In net, Keely Stover had 12 saves as the Rams improved to 6-3-1.
Rams fall on the road to Lima Shawnee
LIMA – Upper Sandusky was held scoreless, 7-0 on the road against Lima Shawnee.
Austin Burns, and Andrew Ritchie each found the goal two times, while Trey Brock, Ryan Roberts, and Brennan Gaffer all recorded one goal each for Lima Shawnee. Brennan Gaffer, Ryan Roberts, and Andrew Ritchie all recorded one assist for Lima Shawnee. The Rams got 16 saves in a great effort from goalkeeper Clay Musgrave.
