Scherger, Blue Jackets break out the thunder

MOUNT BLANCHARD – Kara Scherger hammered two three-run homers as part of New Riegel’s 14-hit attack Thursday in a 10-3 Division IV sectional final win over Arlington.

Scherger’s blasts came in the first and third innings, with the latter putting the Blue Jackets ahead for good at 6-3. She finished 4 for 4 with four runs and seven RBIs.

The two homers also gave New Riegel 31 as a team this year, tying them for third with the 2010 West Liberty-Salem squad on the state record list for single-season round-trippers as a team. Archbold hit 39 last year, and West Liberty-Salem hit 33 in 2011.

Taylor Kirian, who sits one shy of tying the state’s individual single-season home run mark of 17, ended 4 for 4 with three runs and triple. She also fanned six and scattered a walk, six hits and two earned runs to improve to 16-6 in the circle.

Kirian and the Blue Jackets (18-6) will have a chance to add to their marks.

The win propelled New Riegel into Wednesday’s 5 p.m. district semifinal against McComb at Findlay High. The Blue Jackets also have two league games to make up, hosting Lakota Saturday at 11 a.m. and a yet-to-be-rescheduled game against Bettsville.

Against Arlington, Morgan Noftz added two runs and two singles and Lauren Zoeller singled twice.

Rachel Helms suffered the loss for the Red Devils (19-4).

Bauman-led Tigers roll

ATTICA – Rachel Bauman struck out eight and drove in two runs with two singles Thursday to key Seneca East’s 12-7 Midland Athletic League win over Carey.

Lauren Sprenger backed her by going 3 for 4 with three runs and an RBI for the Tigers (15-7, 5-4 MAL).

Cameil Ruffing drove in a pair and singled twice, Holly Bordner scored twice and singled, Caitlin Sauers lined two singles and Kristin Bowerman had a single and two RBIs.

Repeat performance for Rams

BUCYRUS – For the second-straight night, Upper Sandusky and Wynford met on the softball diamond. And for the second-straight night, the Rams came out victorious.

After an eight-inning affair Wednesday, the Rams seemed like they wanted to make sure extra innings wouldn’t be necessary this time around. Upper Sandusky jumped out to a 14-2 lead after three innings and held off a late rally for a 14-9 win.

Justeen Searfoss had three hits for the Rams. Savannah Piecha, Kalene Johnson, Maranda Stansberry and Abby Young all had two-hit days. Kelsi Knapp and Brigitte Snow each scored three runs.

McKenzie Kessler pitched the first five innings, scattering seven hits while striking out four to pick up the win.
