Senecas wallop Mohawks in Fostoria
FOSTORIA – Calvert jumped on top 4-0 in the first inning, and Jesse Gase knocked in three runs as the Senecas overwhelmed Midland Athletic League foe St. Wendelin, 15-1 Monday.
Gase went 3 for 4 with two runs and a double for the Senecas.
Derek Herzog added a 3-for-3 day with three runs and two RBIs, and winning pitcher Eric Elchert (2-4) struck out six in three innings and helped his own cause with two RBIs off two singles.
Elchert and Austin Prenzlin combined to allow just one hit and one walk.
Jacob Vera chipped in two runs and a single, Sam Palm scored twice and singled twice and Brendan Deats had three runs.
Donovan Scudder took the loss for the Mohawks.
Zach Miller singled and drove in Brady Rutter for St. Wendelin.
Lutz, Bucks boot Cubs
NEW WASHINGTON – Austin Lutz handcuffed Lucas’ batters and got plenty of support Monday in Buckeye Central’s 6-1 North Central Conference victory.
Lutz (4-3) struck out 14 and scattered three hits and three walks for the Bucks (7-11, 2-4 NCC). He also scored a run.
Mike Blackford backed him with a homer and two RBIs, and Eric Hanes drove in two runs with two singles and scored a run. Bryce Christy and Jordan Herrnstein each singled and scored, Tanner Zaebst scored, Grant Loy knocked in a run and Seth Parsons doubled.
Levi Harris took the loss, but also singled. Sam Davis and Alex Switzer also singled for the Cubs (3-13, 1-5).
Rally falls short for Warriors
SYCAMORE – Fremont St. Joe turned back Mohawk’s rally late Monday to hold on for a 3-2 Midland Athletic League win.
The Crimson Streaks scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings to go up 3-0, but Mohawk closed the gap in the bottom of the sixth when Devon Fredritz singled in Grant Gucker, then scored on John Riedel’s bases-loaded walk.
The Warriors (5-11, 1-4 MAL) loaded the bases again in the seventh, but the threat died with a strikeout.
Gucker doubled and losing pitcher Andrew Loose added a single.
Bucyrus escapes in 10th to top Rams
BUCYRUS – Bucyrus pushed across a run in the bottom of the 10th Monday to clip Upper Sandusky 3-2 in North Central Conference play.
The host Redmen (5-9, 2-4 NCC) took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the third, but Upper Sandusky (9-6, 3-3) knotted the game in the fifth.
Tristan Reichelderfer (2-3) took the loss.
Cameron Binau, Kolin Johnson, Cody Gabriel and Alex Oney each singled for the Rams.
Knights storm off
FOSTORIA – Otsego broke away in the fifth and kept moving away Monday in a 7-1 Northern Buckeye Conference win over Fostoria.
Fostoria (2-14, 1-3 NBC) tied the game with its run in the bottom of the third, but the Knights countered with three in the fifth and scored three more over the final two innings.
Anthony Dean (1-4) took the loss despite striking out 12.
Casey Kitchen doubled and singled for the Redmen in the loss, and Hunter Abell singled.
