What Will the Browns Do?
The 2018 NFL Draft will begin tomorrow evening and Cleveland Browns fans (yes, I am one) can’t wait to see who the team will draft with the #1 and #4 picks. There has been a lot of speculation with lots of names being bandied about. Barring a trade, the Browns will definitely use one of the picks to get that franchise quarterback they have been seeking forever. After that, well, your guess is as good as mine.
Now I do not pretend to be an expert on football. I have never played the sport, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have some ideas of my own. I will share them, but first I must tell you a couple of things. If I were a judge at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, cuteness would be my standard. A beagle would usually win. A poodle would never even make the Best of Show.
As for football, I got a chance to watch the Browns work out a free agent quarterback when I was in college. The Browns trained at Hiram College during part of my stay there and I was in the field house when Browns coach Nick Skorich brought in this guy. He threw footballs to a friend of mine who was a receiver for Hiram and he threw so many wobbly ducks that I assumed the Browns would not touch him.
Apparently the Browns coaches saw more in Brian Sipe than I did!
So, having established that I am not really qualified for this task, I nonetheless will make my predictions. Conventional wisdom has the Browns using the #1 pick to choose a quarterback. Four names have been suggested as being potential franchise quarterbacks and they are Sam Darnold of USC, Josh Allen of Wyoming, Josh Rosen of UCLA and Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma. Which of these four the Browns GM John Dorsey has settled on is a mystery.
If the Browns can’t make up their mind on the QB, they might want to go with the presumed best player in the draft which is Saquon Barkley the running back from Penn State. They then could choose from two of the four aforementioned QB’s at #4. I don’t see that happening because if either of the two QB’s taken ahead of the Browns choice at #4 are successful, the Browns won’t hear the end of it. You do recall them passing on Carson Wentz and DeShaun Watson?????
If I were making the picks, I would go with Josh Allen #1 and Saquon Barkley at #4 – assuming he is still available. I don’t know why I don’t like Darnold, I could live with Rosen and Mayfield gives me pause to remember Johnny Football, which gives me the willies.
The view from my seat predicts that Dorsey will choose Sam Darnold #1 and Bradley Chubb #4 (Barkley will be gone by then). If I’m wrong, I won’t be the only one. Whatever takes place is going to thrill Browns fans especially after the off season pickups that included Tyrod Taylor and Jarvis Landry. Whether the picks will pan out remains to be seen. They are, after all, the Cleveland Browns!
