Learning with Lynda, LinkedIn at the library

Workforce development matters.

At Tiffin-Seneca Public Library, we see job seekers each and every day. Some come here to check out sample cover letters, some come to use our computers to type and submit resumes or complete online job applications, and some come to research the best way to acquire skills that will help them get ahead.

For the skill seekers, we are proud to announce that a major new resource soon will be available.

The library soon will be offering cardholders free access to online educational courses from Lynda.com. Staff training begins soon and public access will be available Sept. 1.

Now owned by LinkedIn, Lynda.com has been a leading provider of online learning content for 20 years. The service has more than 6,600 courses, ranging from computer programming to project management including instruction on various computer software, programming languages and business topics. The video courses are taught by industry experts and are designed for any skill level.

Lynda.com also offers more than 50 different learning paths to help users stay ahead in their current job or change careers.

Once we have rolled out access to the public, all you will need to access Lynda.com is your library card number and PIN. If you cannot remember your library PIN, staff at our public service desks can help you out. You can log into the service from the library or from the comfort of home. You can even use your smartphone or tablet — basically, any device with an internet connection.

There is truly something for everyone, and I highly encourage patrons to explore. At your fingertips, you will find business basics and personal development courses such as job hunting and résumé or cover letter writing; business skills, communication, marketing and leadership. Dig a bit deeper and you can find more targeted, technical classes on data analysis, cloud computing and server management. Creative arts software training including 3D animation, video editing, photography as well as dozens of popular software and developer tools, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc.); Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, In Design, etc.); the latest versions of popular operating systems such as Windows 10, iOS, Android, Linux; and coding and markup languages such as C, Java, Python, Ruby, MySQL, HTML, CSS, and PHP also are available.

Providing Lynda.com is another way we are supporting the local community, job seekers and small businesses in our area. This project would not have been possible without the hard work of the Ohio Public Library and Information Network, which worked out a deal on behalf of Ohio’s libraries to offer this resource across our state. I truly hope other states follow suit.

Of course, to get to all this great content, you need a library card. If you don’t have one, stop by today with a photo ID and proof of your current address and our staff will be glad to put one in your hands.

Matthew Ross is director of Tiffin-Seneca Public Library.
