It takes a community to put on a tribute
It takes a community, not just a committee, to put on a tribute.
Sunday, Sept. 11, Tiffin will honor our police force, firefighters, hospital employees and military with a day filled with entertainment and fun.
While much of the focus has been placed on the concert by Darryl Worley, I want everyone to understand the entire day is devoted to honoring our first responders. There is no better way to show our support than to come together as a community in large numbers for each event planned that day. We need to let our first responders know that Tiffin residents respect and appreciate everything they do every day to protect our community and make Tiffin a safe and great place to live.
The day’s events will begin with a memorial service at the site of Tiffin’s 9-11 Memorial at 8:46 a.m. This is the exact time that terrorists flew the first plane into the first World Trade Center building. Please join together to honor those who have died either at the hands of terrorists or in the line of duty on this sad and unforgettable day.
Immediately following, there will be a 5K race/walk that will start and end near the same location as the memorial service. Registration is 7:30-8:30 a.m. at the Rotary Park gazebo.
You don’t have to be a runner to participate in this 3.1-mile tribute. Come enjoy the excitement and comraderie this 5K event produces. If you cannot walk the distance, come and cheer on those participants who do.

At 1:30 p.m., don’t miss the parade through downtown Tiffin.
The committee is working hard to make this the most patriotic and exciting parade Tiffin has ever experienced. We are working hard to have more bands, fire trucks from many surrounding communities, ambulances, model cars and much more with a patriotic theme focus.
Our featured artist, Darryl Worley, has also accepted the honor of serving as the grand marshal of the parade. I won’t give away any more details as there are more surprises, but I will say this will be a parade you won’t forget.
From the parade, make your way to the Seneca County Fairgrounds and enjoy the concert. For planning purposes, please be aware entertainment for children will not be provided and all individuals, regardless of age, will pay the admission fee. Tickets in advance are $10 at The Ritz Theatre box office, 30 S. Washington St. in Tiffin. Online tickets are $13 at www.ritztheatre.org. At the gate tickets will be $15 each. Remember, this is all for a great cause.
Food and drink from vendors will be sold at ridiculously low prices. This day-ending festivity is meant to be a low cost, high entertainment event. It will be much more than just a concert by the Eric Sowers Band and Darryl Worley. Between concerts, sky divers from U.S. Army Special Operations will parachute in the American and POW flags.
As far as transportation, SCAT has offered its vehicles to shuttle people to the fairgrounds from the Westgate Shopping Center, and if necessary, overflow parking from the Walmart parking lot.
More than 500 volunteers will insure traffic flows smoothly into and out of the fairgrounds and provide assistance to those needing help with wheelchairs. Those who have problems walking will be assisted with golf carts and volunteers throughout the concert.
Vehicles with handicap stickers will be able to park in the fairgrounds close to the seating section reserved for them. We want to provide an opportunity for everyone to attend this event and insure their entire day is as enjoyable as possible.
This is where we need your help. For planning purposes, we need Tiffin residents to purchase their tickets today! The intent is not to sell any tickets at the fairgrounds the night of the concert.
By having an early accurate count of attendees, the committee can better plan vendor support, bathroom facilities and flow into and out of the concert.
If you are a first responder, you can pick up a free ticket at the Ritz. If you are planning on attending the concert, please purchase your tickets very soon so we can best estimate the support needed to make this the greatest event possible.
Nobody will be allowed into the fairgrounds without a ticket. Don’t get caught without a ticket the day of the concert and miss the biggest event ever put on in Tiffin.
Even if you purchase a ticket and later cannot go, your donation will go primarily to building a much needed and much overdue Vietnam memorial on Frost Parkway. Show our Vietnam veterans and families we have not forgotten their sacrifices.
I will end this update by once again thanking all the businesses that have donated money and services to make this tribute possible.
Without their help the entire day’s events would never happen. To see a list of businesses that have supported us, please go to our website at www.PatriotDaySalute.com. A detailed list of supporters will be published at a later date both in print and in various social media. Please make a point to thank them for their support.
Keep checking for updates as we draw nearer to Sept. 11.
