Paul “Sonny” Lewis DeTray, 82, of 2495 S. SR 53, Tiffin, passed away Saturday, July 29, 2017, at Elmwood Assisted Living at The Shawhan, Tiffin.

He was born Nov. 8, 1934, in Eden Township, to William Shuey and Pauline Margaret (Hamrick) DeTray. On Aug. 17, 1957, he married Jean Ann Bastian at Washington Street Methodist Church, Tiffin, and she survives.

Survivors also include his two sons, Douglas (Kelly) DeTray of Tiffin and Chris (Cynthia) DeTray of Winchester, Virginia; a daughter, Paula (Terry) Lee of Tiffin; six grandchildren, Paul DeTray of Raleigh, North Carolina, Faye DeTray of Toledo, Nicholas (Melanie) Birch of Fostoria, Anthony (Ashley) Birch of Findlay, and Austin and Caitlyn DeTray of Winchester, Virginia; two great-grandchildren, Paige Scranton and Blessing Hayes of Toledo; and a sister, Donna Fate of Tiffin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard “Dick” DeTray; son-in-law, Mark Birch; brother-in-law, Bernard “Bud” Fate; and two grandchildren.

Paul attended Columbian High School, Tiffin, prior to joining the United States Marine Corp as a corporal and was a veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1953-1955. He was a retired carpenter with Local 2239. In Paul’s free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and shooting and collecting firearms. He was a past member of Ohio Gun Collectors, The Archaeological Society of Ohio and a life member of Ohio AMVETS Post No. 48.

The funeral for Paul will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2017, at Engle-Shook Funeral Home & Crematory, Tiffin, with the Rev. Jan Kucera officiating. Burial will follow the services at Greenlawn Cemetery with military rites being rendered by United Veterans Council.

Visitation for family and friends will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
