George T. Kastner

George T. Kastner, 92, of Tiffin, went to join the love of his life, peacefully, with his children by his side Monday, March 31, 2014, at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo.

He was born Nov. 1, 1921, in Tiffin, to Joseph and Margaret (Zapf) Kastner. He married Odelia “Dee” Frances Weatherholt Dec. 1, 1945, and she preceded him in death Sept. 23, 2008.

Survivors include his son, Tom (Margaret Hoffman) Kastner of Tiffin and his daughter, Norma Gladieux of Tiffin; two grandchildren, Jacquelyn (Gladieux) (Kyle) Timmons of Oak Harbor and Eric Kastner of Tiffin; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Rebecca and Anna Timmons; and two sisters-in-law, Marilyn Kastner and Mary Weatherholt.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Paul, William and Raymond Kastner; and a sister, Mary Jo Gase.

George graduated in 1939 from Tiffin Calvert High School and then was in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II Sept. 1, 1942-Nov. 12, 1945, where he earned the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star. George also served at England’s Burtonwood Air Force Base with his brother, Paul. He was a machinist at Webster Manufacturing for more than 47 years; retiring in 1986 and was a member of American Legion Post No. 169.

He enjoyed traveling the United States, collecting Tiffin Glass, going to garage sales with his wife, hunting, fishing, bowling and enjoyed all types of sports, especially, the Detroit Tigers or any Detroit sport. He also loved animals, especially his dog, Yoshi, and enjoyed catching fish with his brother, Ray, and supporting the local fish frys.

George loved his time with his family, watching his grandchildren play sports and attending family reunions. He made friends with everyone.

His Mass of Christian burial will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Tiffin, with the Rev. Gary Walters officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Tiffin, with military honors being conducted by the United Veterans Council. A rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to Mass.

Friends may visit with the family 6-8 p.m. Friday at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, OH 44883, (419) 447-2424. A Christian wake service will begin at 5:30 p.m.
