Donald Shofstahl, 86, of Tiffin, passed away Sunday evening, March 10, 2013, at Volunteers of America Autumnwood Care Center, after losing a 15-year battle to cancer.
He was born Jan. 25, 1927, in Edinburg, Pa., to John E. and Gussie F. (Wingard) Shofstahl. He married Theresa V. Magers April 11, 1959, and she survives.
Also surviving are three nieces, Doris Elaine (Marty) McFerren and Janice Chinell-Smith, both of Tiffin, and Sharon (Claude) Frankart of Mason; stepsister, Joyce Curtis of Northwood; and godchild, Owen Donaldson of Seminole, Fla.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, John C. Shofstahl; two sisters, Doris P. Chinell and Ruth Anna Wepler; and niece, Karen Wepler.
Donald served in the Merchant Marines (Navy), from 1944-1946, during World War II, enlisting during his senior year at Columbian High School. Later, he served in the U.S. Air Force, from 1950-1954, during the Korean War. Donald formerly co-owned the luncheonette in the ’50s and ’60s, later working for Wagner Realty. He was a private pilot and enjoyed flying throughout the Midwest, refinishing furniture, chair-caning and also was a member of Moose Lodge No. 846.
His funeral will be at noon Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, OH 44883, (419) 447-2424, with the Rev. Joseph Szybka officiating. Burial will follow at Fairmont Cemetery, Tiffin, with military honors being conducted by the United Veterans Council.
Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral Saturday at the funeral home.
