A Graytown man died in a single-vehicle rollover accident on CR 5 in Jackson Township Tuesday afternoon.

Lt. Brent Meredith of the Fremont post of State Highway Patrol said Jerry B. Allen, 77, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Meredith said Allen was driving a 1999 Buick LeSabre north on CR 5. The vehicle went off the right side of the road, struck a large tree and a concrete rock, and rolled at least twice, he said.

He said he did not know why Allen, who was wearing a seatbelt, lost control.

Trooper Garrett Lawson, who already was in the area of the accident, and the first emergency medical technician at the scene administered chest compressions for 22 minutes until the ambulance arrived and pronounced Allen dead, Meredith said.

Chief Bob Dible of Kansas Volunteer Fire Department said Risingsun Volunteer Fire Department was called for the Jaws of Life. Rescuers used the Jaws of Life to remove Allen from the vehicle, Meredith said.

Personnel from Bascom EMS, Kansas Volunteer Fire Department, Risingsun Volunteer Fire Department, the county’s Echo unit, D&D Total Repair and Seneca County Coroner’s Office responded.

The accident occurred about 2 p.m.
