BASCOM — Fire in an engine compartment disabled a train near Bascom Monday afternoon.

Assistant Chief Chris Daniel of Bascom Joint Fire District said the fire was in the engine compartment of the front locomotive, and there was some engine damage.

“The turbo had failed, had a failure,” he said.

Daniel said the train stopped at TR 121, and the fire basically had put itself out as the train traveled down the track. Firefighters did not have to use any water to extinguish the fire when they arrived, he said.

No one was hurt.

Personnel from Bascom Joint Fire District, Bascom EMS and the Echo unit responded to the fire, which was reported about 2:50 p.m., according to Seneca County Sheriff’s Office.
