TU professor to teach in Katmandu as part of Fulbright program

A member of Tiffin University’s faculty has been selected for the Fulbright Specialist Program, which involves spending five weeks at Kings College in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Perry Haan, professor of marketing at TU, has worked as a faculty member and administrator in higher education since 1986. He has won teaching awards at three institutions and has taught in eight countries.

“It is a nice honor to be chosen,” Haan said. “I enjoy working in other cultures and the five weeks I will be spending in Nepal should give me enough time to understand some of the culture there.”

He said 80 percent of Nepalese are Hindus, and Hinduism is a religion he wants to learn about.

During his time in Nepal, Haan is to consult with faculty and write case studies about local entrepreneurs and guest lecture in the Kings College undergraduate and graduate entrepreneurship classes.

Haan is looking forward meeting new people.

“I always enjoy getting to know new people and learning about their culture,” he said. “The opportunity to work with colleagues from another institution and with budding entrepreneurs makes this an even more intriguing trip.”

Haan said throughout all the work he has done while at TU, he said knowing more about other economies and cultures enriches his teaching and research.

“We live in a global economy and it is important for faculty members to have firsthand perspectives on the different parts of the world in which business is conducted,” he said. “More of our students at TU are international students and more of our domestic students are spending time outside of the U.S. As faculty, we need to be able to relate to those students.”

Haan won the 2016-17 Tiffin University Scholarship Award, and was awarded a fellowship by the International American Association of Financial Management for his teaching and academic work in international markets in 2010.

Haan earned a doctoral degree from the University of Sarasota, a master’s degree from Xavier University and a bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University. He has authored and co-authored more than 90 peer-reviewed articles, which have appeared in conference proceedings and journals, including the Journal of Marketing in Higher Education and the International Journal of Sports Marketing & Sponsorship.

He has also co-authored a textbook, “Practical Statistics for Business.”
