Flags on display in New Riegel for holiday

NEW RIEGEL – New Riegel’s community garage sales are 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday. During the village council meeting Tuesday evening, Councilman Dale Nye said the new 3-foot-by-5-foot American flags have been displayed along the streets in time for the Memorial Day parade. He said the flagpoles may not be sturdy enough. Councilman Jim Bodart reported Ball Association members cleaned up the community park last Saturday. They fixed a fence and leveled outfield lines. He said sand needed to be applied to the field. Fiscal Officer Meghan Scherger said council members are paid a monthly salary per Ohio Public Employee Retirement System regulations. Solicitor Rick Palau reminded council that a Regional Income Tax Agency committee consisting of four village residents must be formed. The group is to meet twice a year. Interested residents should contact the mayor or call the village office at (419) 595-2644. Village worker Leon Weinandy reported street sweeping and catch basin cleaning have been completed. It was reported most of the inoperable, unlicensed vehicles have been removed with only a couple remaining. In other action, council: Approved an estimate of $550 for Steve Schalk to repair park restrooms. Discussed painting the bell tower and municipal garage. Discussed police coverage in the village. Noted residents may call the sheriff’s department in case of emergencies. Heard alley paving by M&B Asphalt should begin around May 1. Approved a road patch not to exceed $2,000 while M&B is working in the village. Announced May is Motorcycle Awareness Month. Heard the Legacy Bike Ride in Seneca County is Sept. 10. Set the next records retention meeting for 6 p.m. Oct. 18. Is to investigate an outlet tile on the Carr property. Heard a damaged catch basin was repaired. Council is to meet at 7 p.m. May 17.
