Mohawk library addition dedicated
SYCAMORE – It took a year of planning and raising funds, but finally the Mohawk Community Library has a new 1,661-square-foot program and meeting room.
During a dedication ceremony Sunday, Joe Weininger, library Board of Trustees president, welcomed the community.
“We are about books and a whole lot more,” Weininger said. “James Russel Howell said, ‘For books are more than books, they are the life, the very heart and core of ages past. The reason why men lived, worked, and died.'”
The new room is to be used for library programming, including Family Fun Nights, movie nights, craft nights, book discussions and more.
Youth Librarian Christina Reidel and Adult Librarian LeAnne Lenhart said they are to continue to expand programming.
Reidel said she is to begin an after-school workshop for kindergarteners through fifth-graders.
“As a kid, I remember going to the library and getting books,” MCL Director Susan Runion said. “Now, the library offers so much more. We are not just about books any more. Our programming has taken off beyond our wildest dreams. Who knows where we can go.”
The library has not seen any work since Edition I was completed in 1998. Edition II’s construction began in August. The project is to cost about $330,000, Weininger said.
Funding for the facility was secured from the Mohawk Community Library Foundation, Ruthe Earl Bequest, Anderson Charitable Foundation, Tiffin Charitable Foundation, First National Bank of Sycamore and other areas businesses and individuals. The library’s building and repair fund and fundraising committee also acquired funds for the project, Weininger said.
About $80,000 was raised through the fundraising committee, he said.
The room is to be available for community use, Weininger said.
“May the citizens of this area revel in the beauty and utility of this building,” Weininger said. “This edifice is ours. May we use it with pride. Alice Freeman Palmer wrote, ‘Everyday stop before something beautiful long enough to say “Isn’t this beautiful.” This facility is beautiful. That says it all.”
RCM Architects designed the addition to blend in with the existing facility. Clouse Construction, SA Sauber Electrical Contractors, Clinger Mechanical Inc. and Dundore Plumbing, Heating and Cooling LTD were the local contractors who built the facility, Weininger said.
