Fire destroys Sandusky County house
HELENA – A fire destroyed a house that was the home of a single mother and four young boys Saturday evening.
Tim Below, assistant chief for Risingsun Volunteer Fire Department, said personnel from Bradner, Bettsville, Kansas and Risingsun fire departments fought the fire at 2010 CR 32. Also, Bascom Joint Fire District personnel stoodby at Kansas Volunteer Fire Department’s station for several hours, a Seneca County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said.
Below said Joann Murray is the rental’s home owner.
“(The tenants) were not home,” he said.
Below said a small dog died in the house fire.
The cause of the fire and where it started in the house were undetermined Sunday evening.
Below, who lives about a mile from the house and was among the first firefighters to arrive at the scene, said it was difficult to get access to the attic, and the roof burned and fell into the center of the house. Also, electrical issues prevented firefighters from making entry into the single-story house.
American Red Cross and several churches are assisting the family, Below said.
