Woman hurt in crash with semi

A Bettsville woman was transported by Life Flight to a Toledo hospital after an accident involving a semi-truck Friday morning on SR 53 in Ballville Township in Sandusky County.

Sgt. Don Pratt of the State Highway Patrol said Katelynn Young, 21, had been driving a pick-up truck eastbound on CR 9 when she stopped at the intersection and then pulled into the path of a semi-truck that was northbound on SR 53.

The semi-truck, which was operated by Adem O. Djokaj, 40, of Michigan, struck Young’s passenger side door and then went off the right side of the roadway. It then struck an electric pole and several headstones in Hill Cemetery.

Djokaj was not injured, Pratt said.

Pratt said a large dog that was in the pick-up truck was ejected during the accident and killed.

Pratt said he was unsure of the extent of Young’s injuries, but said she was conscious and talking to troopers at the scene prior to Life Flight’s take-off.

Residents in the area lost power due to the pole being knocked over, Pratt said, but AEP was called to the scene to repair the pole.

He said the county health department and the EPA will have to be involved with the clean-up of the six headstones that were knocked over in the accident.

Pratt said Young will be cited for the accident, which was reported at 10:22 a.m.

Pratt said a consequential accident was reported at the scene just after the first crash, but there were no injuries or new damage.

A vehicle that drove through the area had struck and pulled down wires that were damaged from the first accident, he said.
