Police examine infant’s death

ATTICA – Attica Police Department is investigating the death of an infant in the village Sunday morning.

According to a Seneca County Sheriff’s Office report, a woman at 21 E. High St. reported at 9:50 a.m. her baby was sleeping on the couch, and when she turned the baby over, she was purple and not breathing.

Chief Keith Turner of Attica Police Department said Emelia Lynn Carter, 5 months, of Tiffin, was pronounced dead at the East High Street home.

The body was transported to Lucas County Coroner’s Office, and an autopsy is to be performed this morning. Officials are awaiting autopsy and toxicology results and other information to determine whether it is a suspicious death, Turner said.

No one had been charged in connection with the death Sunday.

Personnel from the police department, Attica EMS, Attica-Venice-Reed fire, the sheriff’s office, the county’s coroner’s office and a funeral home responded. A chaplain and the county’s Echo unit also were called but were canceled.

The county’s children services agency was contacted as a safety precaution to have the baby’s sister, who also was in the home when the baby died, examined, Turner said.

The death was under investigation Sunday.

Emelia’s death notice is in the obituaries.
