NR board learns post-secondary courses might cost district more

NEW RIEGEL – New Riegel Treasurer Jane Schalk informed school board members Monday night that schools can no longer charge students for post-secondary courses that are dual enrollment classes.

She said the change was tucked into the 2014 state budget. That means a college course taught by an in-house teacher would cost the district $4,200 for sessions with Tiffin University and $7,700 for students taking University of Findlay courses.

Another situation has cropped up causing more expenses to the district. The State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio has determined the district must not consider some services as temporary but are to submit new hire notifications to STRS and start payroll contributions for this school year. The district may further contest the decision.

Superintendent Elaine Nye reported meeting with other Sandusky River League members Monday including Old Fort, Fostoria St. Wendelin, Lakota, Sandusky St. Mary and Fremont St. Joseph. The football schedule for the league has been set. League play begins next season and the schedule has been set.

She also noted work on the baseball and softball fields has been completed and the athletic boosters plan to pour cement creating a handicapped-accessible path to the restrooms.
