NR board approves teacher contract

New Riegel Board of Education members approved a negotiated agreement Monday evening between the education association and the board.

Because the association also has approved the agreement that runs July 1 through June 30, 2016, the new contract allows a 2 percent raise for 2013-14, a 1.5 percent raise for 2014-15 and 1 percent for 2015-16.

Superintendent Elaine Nye and Treasurer Jane Schalk said they were pleased they were able to stay within the budget set in the five-year forecast.

Principal Dave Rombach noted several changes to the student handbook and the athletic code of conduct. The use of backpacks is being restricted during the school day. The administration encourages students to use their lockers.

Electronic devices only may be used during lunch period in the auditeria or gymnasium and non-instructional time between classes, before and after school and study hall. Offenders will have a parent contacted to remove it from the school. Parents of athletes must sign off after receiving concussion information.

Rombach said K-6 grade cards are available for pick up in the school office.

Student achievement liaison Mary Reinhart reported Josh Nye had been named the Rotary student of the month at Sentinel Career Center during May and Jacob Welly received the director’s award.

The meeting moved into executive session to discuss compensation for public employees.

Board members agreed to apply for a grant from Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca Joint Solid Waste District for $10,000 toward the purchase of portable aluminum bleachers for the baseball and softball fields made from aluminum which is 90 percent recycled content from BR Athletic Facility Products & Services. Estimated cost is $14,000, plus $1,734 for site preparation and a concrete slab. The school district is to provide at least 36 percent matching funds of $5,735.25, allowing Nye to be the designated contact person.
