Man arrested after textbook theft

A man was arrested Monday after he allegedly stole textbooks worth more than $1,000 from Heidelberg Bookstore and then ran from police.

Shawn L. McPherson, 35, whose address is unknown, faces charges of robbery, a third-degree felony, obstructing official business, a second-degree misdemeanor, and theft, a fifth-degree felony, after it was reported just before 11:30 a.m. a man was observed stealing textbooks from the store, located at 44 Greenfield St.

Security officers at Heidelberg University detained McPherson as he was leaving the store, but after shoving one officer into a door frame, he was able to get away from the second officer.

He then ran into the parking lot where he got into the passenger seat of a waiting vehicle.

According to police reports, the vehicle then was stopped on Coe Street where McPherson fled from it and ran into a field.

After several minutes, he returned to the vehicle where he was arrested.

According to the report, the vehicle was towed from the scene.
