H-L board gets building update
BASCOM – President Linda Depinet called Hopewell-Loudon Board of Education to order Monday night. School board members Mary Ruth Crandall and Douglas Ranker reported they toured the new K-12 building. Earlier in the day, Touchstone Construction Planning and Management provided verbal and written progress updates on the multiple contractors.
Elementary Principal Jennifer Losey reported on the “Heritage Committee,” a committee created to preserve the historical legacy of the Hopewell-Loudon schools. More than 700 trophies, pictures and flags, are to be transferred to the new building. Once demolition is complete, bricks will be available for sale.
Superintendent Nichole Jiran said the state report card is not due until the end of the month and Hopewell-Loudon schools is not on the attendance scrubbing list.
Jiran fielded questions from board member Greg Siebenaller regarding possible addition of a forensic science course to be added to the science curriculum as an elective. Vice President Sandy Reinhart acknowledged that there is both strong interest and precedence – an example of which she viewed at a recent conference in Utah.
The board approved an executive session for March 5 to evaluate personnel. Jiran recommended assigning extra duty to Lacy Spurgeon for junior varsity softball; Richard Hughes as substitute employee retroactive to Jan. 17; and Steve Acton as van driver.
Non-certified personnel were approved for one-year appointments, including:
Jason Biller for junior high track.
Luke Schalk for baseball assistant.
Teresa Jones for junior high track.
Volunteer Andrew Brickner for track.
Treasurer Veronica Reinhart said the school has $80,000 less in the budget than the last fiscal year. Several cost-cutting measures are under way, including electric company negotiation for a savings of $10,000-$15,000.
The board reviewed 32 policy proposals for second reading. Policy 2340 – “Field and other District Sponsored Trips” – was the only proposal tabled for complete rewording.
Parents are invited to a “support academics” gathering at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
The board is to meet at 6:30 p.m. March 12.
