South Pacific to play at Star

UPPER SANDUSKY – The cast and crew are hard at work at the Star Theatre preparing for Rodgers & Hammerstein’s classic, “South Pacific,” which takes to the Star stage July 20-28 and Aug. 2-4. The show is under the direction of William Thomas Richards of Mansfield. Brittany Roszman of Upper Sandusky serves as assistant director for the musical. The show is choreographed by Amanda Zucker of Marion.

This classic love story is set during World War II on a French Polynesian island. The United States military has established a naval presence on the island in the Pacific Theatre of operations. The plot centers on a naive optimistic southern nurse, Ensign Nellie Forbush, played by Kiersten Bowmer of Marion. She falls in love with a middle-aged expatriate French plantation owner, Emile de Becque, played by Jim Ruhlen of Upper Sandusky.

A secondary romance develops between a marine lieutenant, Joseph Cable, played by Upper Sandusky resident Lukas Frye, and a young Tonkinese woman, Liat, played by Jayma Voorhies of Delaware.

Supporting characters include the comic petty officer, Luther Billis, played by Wayne Rowe of Upper Sandusky, and Liat’s mother, Bloody Mary, is played by Kathleen Bather of Upper Sandusky.
