Civil War music gets forum
Thursday, the Marion County Historical Society is to host a program on Civil War music in the Heritage Hall auditorium.
The program is to start at 7 p.m. and is to be provided by Steve Ball, a musician and historian from Columbus. He is to perform songs that were popular during the war and the story behind each song.
Admission is free.
Ribs, music come together
The annual Toledo Rib-Off this year is to feature entertainment by Bret Michaels, Kansas and Colt Ford.
The event is Aug. 8, 9, 10 and 11 at the Lucas County Fairgrounds in Maumee.
Barbecue vendors from around the nation are to offer ribs, all vying for top honors. In addition to the Peoples’ Choice Awards, there is to be a celebrity panel to issue the title of “Best Ribs, 2013 Northwest Ohio Rib-Off.”
Rib-Off tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the gate for Aug. 8; and $7 in advance and $10 at the gate the remaining days. They can be bought now at www.etix.com.
Ford tickets are $15 in advance and $19 at the gate. Michaels tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the gate. Kansas tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the gate.
Annual show seeks talent
The fourth annual “Fremont’s Got Talent” show is set for Aug. 11. Applications for the competition are being accepted through July 7 from amateur performers residing in Sandusky, Seneca, Wood, Ottawa and Erie counties.
The winner is to receive $1,000. The second-place award is $600, the third is $400 and the top youth is to receive $300.

State fair rebooks show
Following the death of country music legend George Jones, Ohio State Fair officials have announced The Oak Ridge Boys, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers and Crystal Gayle are to perform in his place.
The show is at 7 p.m. Aug. 2 at the WCOL Celeste Center on the Ohio State Fairgrounds in Columbus.
Current ticket holders may use their tickets for this show.
The fair runs July 24-Aug. 4.
Memorial run scheduled
Airman Nathan E. Smith Memorial 5K Run/Walk and 1K Kids’ Run is set for June 8, starting at Tiffin Eagles, 68 Riverside Drive. The course winds along the Sandusky River and through local neighborhoods. No pets are allowed.
Registration is 8 a.m.-8:45 a.m. The kids’ run for ages 11 and younger is at 8:15 with the 5K at 9. Entry fees are $15 if received by May 31 and $20 on race day. The kids’ run is $9 per entry.
Memorial Day services set
Memorial Day services are to be conducted at Omar Chapel at 1:30 p.m. May 27.
The chapel is four miles north of Attica on SR 4, just south of SR 162. Memorial Day services have been conducted at the site since around 1880 or earlier.
Marcus Collins, a Vietnam veteran from Norwalk, is to be the guest speaker, honoring the 40th anniversary of the end of the war in Vietnam. Pastor Michael Padula is to provide music on the accordian. American Legion Victory Post 260 is to perform military honors.
Following the services, Larry Lepard of Norwalk is to lead a historic walking tour of the cemetery, weather permitting.
Trip to Indy in the works
The Allen Eiry Senior Center in Tiffin is taking registrations for an Indianapolis tour Aug 21-23. It includes two nights’ lodging, two breakfasts, dinner theater tickets for “Father of the Bride,” a sightseeing tour and stops at the famous speedway, a car factory, Harrison presidential site and Connor Prairie.
The cost is $519 per person for double occupancy. A deposit of $100 is needed to reserve a seat, with the balance due by July 15.

Garage sale planned
The Paul M. and Lucy J. Gillmor Charitable Foundation is to host a garage sale 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. June 14 and 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. June 15 at Old Fort High School.
So far, the foundation has collected furniture, appliances, collectibles, decorations, housewares, books, glassware, clothing, infant items, electronics and sporting goods, including several bicycles.
Proceeds are to be used to help the needy in the region.
