Jazz, gospel tribute scheduled Saturday

PORT CLINTON – Terra State Community College starts the new year with a tribute to American jazz and gospel at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Port Clinton Performing Arts Center, 811 S. Jefferson St.

Michael Shirtz, producer of Terra State’s performance series, said the concert is an introduction to the college’s new jazz and American music program. The performance is to feature the Terra State Jazz Band, Terra Jazz Combo II and special guest, Uneiq, performing the music of gospel and jazz composers, including Ray Charles, Billie Holiday and more.

The Terra State Jazz Band is a full Big Band ensemble that specializes in traditional and contemporary styles of jazz, swing, funk and blues. Past performances include the Winter Jazz Festival, Terra State Music and Arts Festival, Sawmill Creek Jazz Festival, Sandusky State Theatre, Fremont’s Summer Park Series and area high schools.

Jazz Combo II is a student ensemble of Terra students playing traditional and contemporary jazz in group and small ensemble settings. The combo is to open for Uneiq, a gospel and R&B group. Ebenezer Church of God in Christ’s gospel choir is to perform with Uneiq.

This launches a series of Black History Month shows at Terra State in February. Admission is $10. For details, call (419) 559-2233.
