Heidelberg makes big second half comeback in OAC quarterfinal
BEREA — Heidelberg’s up-and-down season was encapsulated in Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal game Tuesday against Baldwin Wallace.
The Student Princes shot about 35% in the first half, and went to the break trailing the Yellow Jackets 38-27.
But the second half was a different story. Behind a brilliant effort from Tamal Watkins, the Princes stormed back.
Watkins finished with 30 points and five rebounds, making 6 of 8 3-pointers. HU scored 48 points in the second half, shot better than 61 percent from the floor, and advanced to Thursday’s semifinals with a 75-69 win.
The Student Princes will take on Mount Union at 7 p.m. Thursday in Alliance. Heidelberg split the regular season series with the Purple Raiders, and handed them their only conference loss Jan. 4 at Seiberling Gymnasium.
On Tuesday, Emmanuel Perdue had 19 points and six boards, while Josh Dixon had 10 points and seven rebounds.
Heidelberg improved to 12-14. It marked HU coach Andy Bucheit’s first tournament win as coach.
Baldwin Wallace got 24 points and 16 rebounds from Drew Sova. It finished at 14-12. It beat Heidelberg in each of the teams’ regular season meetings.
