Settles named top OCCAC volleyball player

TOLEDO — Owens Community College freshman Tyriana Settles was named the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference volleyball player of the year Monday.

The Fostoria graduate is the fifth Express player in as many years to earn the honor.

Settles pounded 220 kills and had a .359 kill percentage in 16 league matches, putting her in the top three in each category in the OCCAC. She also ended with 4.1 digs per set, which was seventh-best in conference play.

Freshman Rebecca Brown and sophomore Kayla Bekier joined Settles on the first team from Owens Community College, while freshman Semira Neely landed on the honorable mention list.

Owens Community College’s Sonny Lewis was named the OCCAC coach of the year for the 10th time since 2002.

The Express (40-4, 16-0 OCCAC) will begin defense of their national title Nov. 14 as the No. 1 seed in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III National Championship tournament in Rochester, Minnesota.
