Columbian’s season ends at sectionals
FREMONT — Two of the three singles players and one of the two doubles teams for Columbian picked up wins Thursday at the Division I sectional tournament at Fremont Ross.
However, each one bowed out of the tournament in the next round.
At singles, Sammy Kimmet fell to Lucy Miller (Fremont Ross) 6-3, 6-4. Anna Stephey topped Sandusky’s Kaiya Purdy 6-2, 6-1, before falling to Audra McBride (Ashland) 6-0, 6-0. McBride was seeded second in singles. Casey Knutson downed Fremont Ross’ Alexis Huff 6-2, 6-3, but lost to No. 1 seed Corinne Harris of Ashland 6-0, 6-1.
At doubles play, Morgan Amory and Alyson Riley defeated Fremont Ross’ Brynn Ruppert and Trinity Smith 6-1, 6-1, before losing to the Ashland duo of Alice Dorrell and Laura Slabaugh 6-2, 6-1.
Erin Musil and Linzi Boos lost to a pair from Oregon Clay 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
Rams get a win, but
don’t advance anyone
SHELBY — In a tough Division II sectional at Shelby, Upper Sandusky’s Adrian Malone got the lone win for the Rams, but none of the Rams advanced to district in the end.
At singles play, Ontario’s Lizzie Burson topped Upper Sandusky’s Lauren Schoenberger 6-2, 6-2, while Willard’s Natalie Van Zoest beat Jada Manns 6-1, 6-0.
Malone defeated Lexington’s Rachel Nelson 6-0, 6-0, before falling to Willard’s Addison Paxton 6-0, 6-0.
At doubles, the Rams’ duo of Saki Fukuta and Mara Smalley fell to a pair from Shelby 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, and Hannah Frey and Sarah Scott lost to another Shelby pair 6-0, 7-6 (7-5).
“Not the way we wanted to end the season, but we played hard today,” Rams coach Aaron Frazee said. “I was happy with Adrian Malone’s performance. She progressed from not being in the varsity lineup at the start of the year to getting a win in the sectional tournament. With her only being a sophomore, we hope that she will continue to show that level of improvement.”
