Columbian boys eighth at sectional
Brown shoots 87 for TC, but doesn’t advance
BOWLING GREEN — Columbian’s Brenton Brown was in contention for a Division I district tournament berth, but came up a few strokes short.
The Tornadoes’ senior shot a team-best 87 Tuesday at the sectional at Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green, helping the squad to an eighth-place 376.
The top five teams, and the top five individuals not on those teams, advanced to next week’s district meet, one step from state.
Brown was consistent Tuesday, shooting a 43 on the front nine and a 44 on the second. He ended tied with Anthony Wayne’s Hogan Heck for 27th.
The highest qualifying score went to Findlay’s Harrison Hall, who beat Defiance’s David Jimenez on a playoff hole to get out with an 85.
Joey Hoppenjans of St. John Jesuit was the individual sectional champion with a 73, three shots better than Findlay’s Nick Feighner and Nick Mendoza, who each had a 76.
There were 14 teams at the sectional. Perrysburg shot a 315 for the team title. St. John’s Jesuit (323), Sylvania Northview (327), Anthony Wayne (328) and St. Francis (334) also advanced.
For the Tornadoes, Griffin Bunting shot a 91, teammate Cole Routzahn had a 97, and Hayden Carter and Collin Anway each shot a 101.
