Col. John Joseph Peter Reddy, USMC, (retired), 86, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at Colony Ridge Nursing Home, Nags Head, N.C., where he had resided since 2007.
He was born Aug. 24, 1927, in New York City. After graduation in 1950 from St. John's University, New York, he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. As a Marine aviator, he flew many types of aircraft including the A-6E Intruder. He served as commanding officer of Marine All Weather Attack Squadron 225 in Vietnam. He later advanced to commanding officer, Marine Aircraft Group 14, Cherry Point, N.C. He rose to the rank of colonel, and retired from active duty in 1979 from the faculty of the Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Va. After retirement from the Marine Corps, he served as a financial planner for the city of Norfolk for 10 years.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Theresa M. Reddy of Southern Shores, N.C.; five married children, Mrs. Brigid (Ed) Hagarty of Silver Spring, Md., John of Knoxville, Tenn., Bob of Tampa, Fla., Mrs. Ann (Gene) Damon of Findlay and Peter of Quantico, Va.; and 11 grandchildren, Catherine and Patrick Hagarty, John and Jocelyn Reddy, Sean, Chris and Thomas Reddy, Catharine and Walker Damon and Erin and Robert Reddy.
His funeral Mass and burial will be Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at Quantico National Cemetery, Quantico, Va.
