Johann "Hans" Neumaier, 84, of Rochester, N.Y., died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013.
Hans was born in Germany, beginning his barber apprenticeship at age 14. Hans also was an amateur boxer, participating in 189 fights and only losing 12 bouts. He married Erika Fischer in 1951, in Germany, and she preceded him in death in 2008.
Hans emigrated to the United States in 1957 and began working for The Harper Method Co., which at the time was the largest franchisor of beauty salons in the world. During those years, he traveled to 32 states and Canada as the Harper Method director of education.
In 1963, he opened his first salon, Hans House of Beauty, eventually owning four Shapers Salons in Rochester. He started the Shapers School of Beauty in 1971, with many of his students still working in the Rochester area today. Always the entrepreneur, in 1977, he began a wholesale beauty supply company. Hans' current company, Goldwell of NY, continues to be one of the most successful beauty products distributors in the country.
Throughout his career, education and mentoring were an integral part of his work. Hans and his late wife, Erika, loved traveling the world and entertaining friends at their home.
