FOSTORIA - Andy Clouse and Larry Downing took ownership of the Fostoria Country Club in November and have made many improvements.
Thursday afternoon, they hosted a ribbon-cutting for renovations to the clubhouse and golf course at 747 Independence Ave., Fostoria.
The most obvious upgrades are a spacious outdoor deck, new roof and exterior siding. The interior also has been remodeled and spruced up with fresh paint and new carpeting.
On the course, Clouse said crews have lengthened many of the cart paths, built tee boxes and repaired the computerized irrigation system.
"We have actually gone around and taken out hundreds of trees ... all (trees affected by emerald ash borer). We don't cut down a live tree on a golf course," General Manager Bud Bailey said.
The new owners have done a share of the work themselves, Bailey said. Wes Downing, Larry's son, is grounds superintendent. He worked at the club last summer and stayed on through the winter to help Bailey with course changes.
"Digging holes, putting chemicals down, mechanic ... doing every day whatever needs to be done," Wes Downing said, to describe his responsibilities.
Director of golf is Greg Day, a Heidelberg University graduate, formerly employed at Geary YMCA.
"I've been here about a month," Day said. "I was the senior program director at the Y for just under two years. I played college golf at Heidelberg."
