The Tiffin City Board of Education discussed ways to save on utilities during its Tuesday night meeting.
The board approved Brewer-Garrett Co. to begin an investment grade audit wherein engineers will enter the district's facilities to look at any energy conservation measures the district wants to accomplish. Dave Smith, business development manager of Brewer-Garrett Co, presented the board with plans to address the board's needs and projects related to House Bill 264. The bill proposes government funding to go toward specifically approved projects through the Ohio School Facility Commission, which will allow districts to use utility funds for capital improvements.
For example, Smith said the audit would work toward replacing lighting in the middle school and to incorporate occupancy sensors to save on electricity costs. It also would implement Green Apple projects, in which students, through lesson plans and educational resources, learn the importance of saving energy.
"It comes down to the kids," Smith said. "Kids are not interested in how much is being saved, but they are interested in saving the world."
In addition, Brewer-Garrett would work to replace aged computers and windows.
The board also approved a resolution for the Clinton Elementary School building to be placed in public auction. The auction will take place April 20 with a minimum bid of $200,000. A retainer fee of $10,000 is to be placed on the day of the auction and the offer is to be presented no later than April 30; with the closing date no later than May 30.
During the board's regular January meeting, the board discussed the level of bus service for the 2013-14 year. The projected amount for service was set at $118,000 which was then increased to $169,000. For the next school year, the district plans to make busing changes. Grades K-5 will remain with current service, which states that any student living outside a half-mile radius from the school would be picked up. Students in grades 6-8 will receive service if they live outside a radius of 2 miles from the school, and no service would be provided to students in grades 9-12.
The service set for the next school year would save the district nearly $40,000 from a reduction in routes and the number of students needing service, Superintendent Donald Coletta said.
The board will make a decision during the regular March meeting.

The board also approved the lowest bid to purchase two new buses, a 72-passenger bus for $80,000 and a 30-passenger bus for $46,000.

* Approved a contract for treasurer Sharon Perry effective Aug. 1 through July 31, 2018.
* Approved the annual OSBA membership dues for the 2013 calendar year.
* Approved the 2013-14 district calendar.
* Approved employment.
* Authorized the bid process for the renovation of the Frost Kalnow stadium and track.
* Authorized a contract with North Central Ohio Educational Service Center for special education services.
* Recalled Meghan Michaels, whose contract was suspended by previous board action as part of a reduction of force.
* Heard the musical "Grease" dates will be March 15, 16, 22 and 23.
* Heard the neighborhood schools were recognized with a plaque by Bair Brothers Inc.
The next regular meeting will be at 7 p.m. March 26 in the Tiffin Middle School Cafetorium.
