Jack E. Smith, 78, formerly of Fostoria, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, at Good Samaritan Hospice Residence, Battle Creek, Mich.
He was born May 8, 1934, in Fostoria, the son of Morell and Violet (Zender) Smith.
Jack graduated from Fostoria High School and then began his long career in the insurance business. During his self-employed career he won many awards and, more importantly, many friends. Jack was a loving family man with a charming personality and dry sense of humor. He also was extremely competitive. He enjoyed going to the gym and decided to become a certified personal trainer at the age of 67.
Jacks' fondest memories were with his involvement in Fostoria youth baseball. As his health failed, he often talked about all the young men he had coached and wondered how they were doing.
Jack is survived by his wife, Billie; former spouse, Marilyn Smith-McCoy (Holman); two sons, Eric (Donna) Smith of Battle Creek, Mich., and Aaron (Donene) Smith of Fostoria; a daughter, Kim (Steve) Dandurand of Fostoria; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Phyllis Lind.
The family will have a small private visitation Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at Shaw Funeral Home, Battle Creek, Mich., followed by a funeral.
Memorial donations may be made to The Greater Fostoria Community Foundation, 112 N. Main St., Fostoria, for the renovation of Fostoria Community Foundation Park (formerly Meadowlark Park).
