Thank You Boys

October 1, 2013 - Al Stephenson
Before the playoffs begin for my beloved Tribe, let me say this - Thank You Boys! In what seems a silly way to determine which wild card team will advance and have a legitimate chance to have a great postseason, the Indians season may be over in a single night. Only the Reds or Pirates will win tonight and continue on for at least several games. Ditto for Tampa and Cleveland. Personally I think a best of three series for the wild card teams merits a discussion. If you play 162 games and get in the playoffs, you should at least get to play one game at home.

But I digress. What I really want to say in this blog is this: if the Indians lose tomorrow night and the season ends abruptly, so be it. This has been a great season. The last two weeks have been electrifying. From a modest beginning to a stellar end, 2013 will go down in this fan's mind as a wonderful ride. Along the way it was a little bumpy.

I told people throughout the season that the Indians were playing just well enough to p*#& me off. If they were bad I could watch something else on TV. But they played just well enough, won just enough games, to keep me watching and when they played badly I got mad at them.

This team persevered however, and now they get to reap the rewards - if only for one game. Who would have thought they would win their last ten games. 9-1 would have created a nightmare three way tie. 8-2 and they would already be packing for their off season digs. They won them all however and I don't want to hear about the schedule. Indeed they played three teams that were out of contention, but they are still big league teams and the last time I looked you had to play everyone on your schedule.

I could talk about the 7 four-game sweeps, but hey they won over 90 games, there is no need to apologize. The Indians did not back into the postseason. They earned it.

That brings us back to the present. Win or lose tomorrow, I have enjoyed the pennant race. In many cases the journey can be better than the destination itself. I think that's the case here.

The view from my seat suggests that Indian fans should be happy with the season. Let's hope it goes on for a few more weeks, but if not I stand by my statement. Thank you boys.
