TU men vs. Walsh

February 16, 2013 - Zach Baker
TU began the game in a 6-0 hole, but has rallied to tie after a layup by Cody Dennison. 15:49 remains in first half.

And just like that, Tiffin is down 12-6. Walsh' Kenny Kornowski is proving problematic for the Dragons defense, as he's converting underneath and has eight points. TU also is struggling with the Cavalier press. It has turned the ball over six times in five minutes.

Dragons have missed a ton of short range shots. Trail 19-11 at the 12-minute mark of the first half.

At the second media timeout, TU trails 22-17. Biggest issue so far for TU has been turnovers and lack of execution near the basket. Actually that's two issues.

The Dragons may have missed more bunnies in this half than some teams miss in a month. TU hasn't scored in three minutes, and you can't do that against Walsh. They're down 35-21 with 3:20 left.

Dragons down 41-32 at halftime. A nice 5-0 run in the final minute brought the Dragons within striking distance. Mike Brown, who is another coach on the floor, hit a right corner 3 near the buzzer to make it a 9-point game.

Kenny Kornowski is a really nice player. He finishes around the basket and gobbles up boards. He's on pace for a 22-12 game.

Joe Graessle has nine second half points, and TU has cut the Walsh lead down to 5, 53-48 at the 13:37 mark. Walsh has two very good 3-point shooters in Brad DuPont and Ryan Vanderhost, which has allowed the Cavaliers to run a solid inside-out game.

Now it's 55-48 Walsh. TU had a couple chances to get within three, but again is struggling around the basket. 12:48 left.

Jonathan Sutherlin with back-to-back layups, and Tiffin has cut the Walsh lead to 57-55 with 9:49 left. Better defense, and better finishing, while Walsh has had a few turnovers to help the run.

Tiffin came all the way back to take a 60-59 lead on a Khaleal McCormick 3. And the Walsh's outside shooters got three open looks from deep. Vanderhorst hit two in a row, then Dupont hit one from the right wing. And suddnly TU is down eight. Dragons have gone four possessions without scoring. And now Kornowski has a chance at a three-point play. It makes one wonder if the Dragons can withstand this type of sudden momentum shift. It's a 12-0 run. One other thing: Walsh is making its free throws. TU is not.

It's not looking good for Tiffin right now. Joe Graessle's 3 on the other end comes up short and it looks like TU might be gassed. Dragons trail 71-61 with 4:53 left. You have to give Walsh credit. It has hit the shots when it needed to, Tiffin hasn't. It's also been dynamite from the foul line. Tiffin hasn't.

If the question was whether Dragons would recover from Walsh's run, the answer has been a resounding "no." Dragons' offense, which was shaky most of the day, completely fell apart, as did the defense. Walsh is on a 26-8 run. It's 85-68 with 1:12 left.

Walsh beats Tiffin 88-70.
