More assaults in the Middle East

Once again — after horrific assaults on the Gazan people these last weeks–I find it necessary to report some facts from Israel/Palestine since our mainstream media is not reporting it. While living in Hebron Palestine, and most frequently while the Palestinians are experiencing war as they are now, the U.S. is dealing with one or more internal crises that consume Americans’ minds. www.washingtonpost.com/world/middle_east/israel-kills-senior-leader-of-palestinian-islamic-jihad-in-gaza-air-strike/2019/11/12/bc2817d0-0506-11ea-9118-25d6bd37dfb1_story.html

For anyone confused about what is happening in the Middle East it is necessary to know that “Islamic Jihad” in the holy book Koran does not necessarily mean “physical, military war.” The title could mean three different things: a) struggle or effort b) a believer’s internal struggle to live out the Muslim faith as well as possible or c) the struggle to build a good Muslim society. Likewise, a “rocket” in our American culture does not mean a huge manufactured rocket when our mainstream newspapers report that Islamic Jihad has fired over 600 rockets into Israel. These are primarily homemade small projectiles which disrupt and destroy buildings to some degree, but as far as is known, two Israelis have died from the rockets since 2008 as compared to hundreds and even thousands of Palestinians dying from Israeli bombs and gunfire largely financed by U.S. citizens.

If anyone is following news on the Israeli newspaper “Harretz” or Phillip Weiss’s blog “Mondolweiss,” it definitely becomes clear that there is an unequal fire power going on between Gaza and Israel currently. In just the first two days from bombs dropped on Gaza, 32 Palestinians have been killed including a family of 8 with 5 children involved as contrasted with one Israeli adult killed by Gazan“rockets” killed during the same time period. The “Electronic Intifada” reports that if Abu Murad’s estimate is right, the explosive power Israel has fired on Gaza by land, sea and air so far is roughly equivalent to one of the atomic bombs the United States dropped on Japan in August 1945: the smaller bomb on Hiroshima rated at 13 kilotons (equivalent of 13,000 tons of high-explosive TNT while the bomb dropped on Nagasaki was rated at 21 kilotons.) Call that an even match? Though this “David-Goliath” power struggle has tried to be lit up and carried by social media, by Peace Activists and many other journalists from Gaza, the general attitude shown by American Congress people and our president continues to be: “Who cares?”

As long as Americans continue to support Israel (a first world country with the 4th. largest military in the world) to the tune of almost 4 billion dollars a year, and as long as Americans yield to Israel’s every wish, there will be no reconciling toward real justice first and then peace following for the Palestinians. As long as our U.S. Senators, including Sherrod Brown and Robert Portman, are beholden to Israeli “security” and not to the equally important security of the Palestinians (Both West Bank’s and Gaza’s), the world can expect Palestinians to scream out for protection of their human RIGHTS.
