Celebrate Library Card Sign-up Month
Do you remember when you got your first library card? Maybe it was when you were a child, and the library was this huge magical place, full of endless possibilities. Or perhaps you were a teenager, just discovering graphic novels and attending a teen program. Or it’s possible that you did not get a library card until you were an adult, checking out your first audiobook or streaming music from one of our digital services. No matter your age, it was probably surprising and exciting to learn that the library is so much more than just books.
The American Library Association celebrates that excitement during “Library Card Sign-up Month” annually throughout the month of September. The association and libraries nationwide join together to remind parents, caregivers and students that signing up for a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning. We here at T-SPL believe in highlighting the importance of a library card for everyone. We invite any member of the community, five years of age and up, to come to the library this month and get a brand new library card!
So what can you do with a library card? Well, the obvious answer is check out books and movies. But there’s so much more to the Tiffin-Seneca Public Library! We have special programming for babies through adults, including a brand new storytime schedule that offers consistent times each month and programs for the whole family. And you only need a library card number and personal identification number to take advantage of our digital services, which include eBooks, audiobooks, movies, music and magazines! You also have access to a number of databases and resources for genealogy, history and more, as well as Lynda.com, which has more than 6,600 workplace development courses at your disposal — all free with your library card!
We are celebrating Library Card Sign-up Month a number of ways at the library. For starters, every new patron who signs up for a card will get a sticker that they can wear with pride to show off their new library card. Any new patron also is automatically signed up to win our “Orange you glad you got a library card” gift basket. And since we are using this month as an opportunity to celebrate the library, we are also giving our loyal patrons who already have a card the opportunity to win! Simply refer a friend to the library, and if they sign up for a card, your name goes in for the gift basket as well! The Tiffin-Seneca Public Library has more than 20,000 patrons. How many new library cards do you think we gave out in 2017? Have your guesses ready to go when you come to the library this month! The closest guess will win a book and a gift card.
