Continually attacking the Affordable Care Act

Donald Trump continued his all-out attack on the Affordable Care Act this week. A federal appeals court heard arguments from Republicans to toss out the entire law, jeopardizing health care for millions of Ohioans.

If they win, nearly five million Ohioans with pre-existing conditions would lose protections, half a million people now covered under Medicaid expansion would lose coverage and, as the Ohio Hospital Association estimates, one-fourth of Ohio’s hospitals would be at risk for closure.

Key support for rural hospitals would disappear, leaving our hospitals on the hook for $1.9 billion more in uncompensated care costs.

Hospitals are huge economic engines and employers in many counties across the state, including here. In Seneca County, our hospital is a critical part of our health care safety net and a big employer. If we lose Tiffin Mercy Hospital, we lose jobs and access to emergency care, maternity care, cardiac care and so much more.

Donald Trump has already done so much to undermine the Affordable Care Act, and now he’s putting even more Ohioans at risk with this lawsuit. Whether you’re a Democrat, Republican or independent, we all should support our local hospital and support the ACA. We can’t go backward.
