Keep drinking off sidewalks

I am writing this letter in rebuttal to Amy Reinhart’s column in favor of creating a downtown outdoor refreshment area. The column talks of restaurants and bars having seating on the sidewalks outside their establishments. If that is a main consideration in having a DORA, why must we open South Washington Street all the way from the river to The American Legion? Will Uncle Mike’s ice cream shop be sandwiched in between outdoor drinking on both sides? When children and families come for ice cream, won’t there be drinking outside the American Legion on its left and Clover Club on its right?

When you say Tiffin has compromised, I disagree. The hours are Tuesday from 4 p.m. until closing; Wednesday, from 4 p.m. until closing; Thursday, from 4 p.m. until closing; Friday, from 4 p.m. until closing; and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Leaving only Sunday and Monday out is not what I consider a compromise.

You say there was an online survey. Having asked numerous people their thoughts on DORA, I did not find one person who felt it was a good idea. I guess the fact that many people did not know of this online survey could have had an impact on those results. You don’t mention the many calls to Tiffin City Council against DORA.

You talk about economic benefits to Tiffin, but it’s at the expense of turning the main street of our town into an open drinking area! I mentioned before how much good Tiffin and Seneca County have been doing for our citizens who have addiction issues. This is counter-productive to what Tiffin and the Seneca County courts have been working on, to help people get their lives back on track. Is it fair to anyone, with or without addiction issues, to walk past open drinking on the main street of our town?

I urge city council to vote to keep the drinking in the bars/restaurants and off our streets.
