Leonard H. ‘Stocky’ Stockmaster

Mr. Stockmaster

Leonard H. “Stocky” Stockmaster, 88, passed away Friday, July 12, 2019, at Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo.

Leonard was born June 5, 1931, on the family farm, to Ralph and Irene (Mahl) Stockmaster of Willard (Havana). They are deceased. Leonard lost his father when he was only 4 years old to an automobile accident. His mother was left with three children to raise, and she never remarried. There were some very hard times in those years.

He was a 1950 graduate of Attica Local High School. Leonard started working for Attica Lumber Co. and completed 48 years of carpentry as head boss, retiring in 1996. They built houses and cabins in the Lake Erie area as well as a huge horse barn in Diamond, Ohio, and a huge boat storage barn at the lake. He was sent out to build the first pole barn by his boss, Fritz Miller, in the late 1950s without blueprints or anything, but he figured out how to accomplish this. He could find a way to fix anything. He was a great finisher for cupboards and wood work joints. He loved to be in his shop at home to build items or to just tinker around. When the Knights of Columbus building was constructed, he built the island, cupboards and bar in his shop, and then installed them in the hall. They fit perfectly.

Leonard married his high school sweetheart, Cleona (Bollinger) Stockmaster, June 19, 1954, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church (Our Lady of Hope, Attica). They were lucky to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary Monday, June 17, 2019, with a surprise party planned by their daughters, son-in-law and grandson at their nephew’s restaurant, Brad’s Barbeque, Bellevue.

He and his wife, Cleona, loved to put a large garden out every year and enjoyed mowing their large yard as well as playing cards, especially euchre.

He is survived by his wife, Cleona (who joined the Catholic Church Easter Sunday, 1954); two daughters, Becky Goble and her son Bradley, and Betsy (David) Latteman; one sister, Mary Elizabenth Wiesbrock of Illinois; many nieces and nephews; and his special companion dog, Bambi.

He was preceded in death by a son, William Brian Stockmaster, in 2002; brother, Donald Stockmaster and his wife, Evelyn; three brothers-in-law, Leonard Wiesbrock, Harold Bollinger and his wife, Margaret, and Wayland Bollinger and his wife, Alice; and three sisters-in-law, Ruth Weinandy and her husband, Robert, Doris Spitler and her husband, Ralph, and Iola Williams and her husband, Don.

A Mass of christian burial will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2019, at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church with Fr. Rev. Nathan Bockrath officiating.

A rosary service will begin at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2019, with visitation from 5-8 p.m. at Lindsey-Foos-Kocher Funeral Service, 295 W. Tiffin St., Attica. Burial will be at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Attica.

Memorial contributions may be made to Attica EMS, Home Away From Home, St. Vincent’s, Attica Knights of Columbus or Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church through the funeral home.
