State COVID-19 deaths top 1,300, cases top 23,000

Ohio cases of COVID-19 topped 23,000 and deaths topped 1,300 in Friday's report from the Ohio Department of Health, showing more than 3,600 new cases since last Saturday. The ODH website Friday listed 23,016 total cases — 21,969 confirmed and 1,047 probable — up from 22,131 Thursday, 21,576 Wednesday, 20,969 Tuesday, 20,474 Monday, 19,914 Sunday and 19,335 last Saturday. The statewide death total was 1,306 Friday, up from 1,271 Thursday, 1,225 Wednesday, 1,135 Tuesday, 1,056 Monday, 1,038 Sunday and 1,021 Saturday. That means 285 people died from the virus this week. Percentages show 6% of total cases end in death. Seneca County General Health District's website Friday reported no change to the 14 confirmed cases of COVID-19. The latest numbers in Wood County Wednesday were 218 confirmed and probable cases, including 57 hospitalized and 29 deaths. Of the cases, 158 are related to long-term-care facilities – 117 residents and 41 staff members. Numbers reported by other neighboring counties were: Crawford, 76 confirmed and probable, 2 hospitalized, 38 recovered, 1 death; Hancock, 39 confirmed and probable, 7 hospitalized; 1 death; Sandusky, 47 confirmed and probable, 17 hospitalized, 7 deaths; Wyandot, 26 confirmed and probable, no current hospitalizations, 20 recovered, 2 deaths; and Huron, 37 confirmed and probably, 8 hospitalized, 12 recovered, 1 death. Lucas County has the most deaths at 161 Friday, up from 155 Thursday, 151 Wednesday and 133 Tuesday. Ohio counties with more than 1,000 cases include Franklin, 3,377 (108 deaths), an increase of 238 cases from Thursday; Cuyahoga, 2668, (143 deaths), up 77 cases from Thursday; Marion, 2,366 (13 deaths); Pickaway, 1,842 (23 deaths); Lucas, 1,665, (161 deaths), up 137 cases from Thursday; Hamilton, 1,664, (100 deaths), up 92 cases from Thursday; Mahoning, 1,087 (119 deaths). Counties with between 400 and 999 cases include Summit, 867, (74 deaths), up 136 from Thursday; Lorain, 537 (44 deaths); Stark, 464 (62 deaths); Butler, 404, (12 deaths). ODH reported 4,218 hospitalizations and 1,188 intensive care admissions Friday, which is 18% of cases are hospitalized and 5% are placed in ICU. Friday's numbers compare to 4,140 hospitalizations and 1,167 in ICU Thursday and 4,052 hospitalizations and 1,151 in ICU Wednesday. Of the total, the website reported the percentage of healthcare workers has gone from 16% to 15%. The total number of people tested in Ohio was reported Friday to be 183,269, up from 175,060 Thursday, 167,978 Wednesday and 159,838 Tuesday. Since last Friday, more than 43,500 people have been tested. The age range of confirmed cases in Ohio is from younger than 1 to age 106 with a median age of 51, and 55% are male and 45% are female. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website had not been updated late Friday afternoon and reported the same numbers as Thursday. The total number of cases was 1,219,066, which was 25,253 more than Wednesday. The nationwide death total was reported Friday to be 73,297 Thursday, 70,802 Wednesday, up from 62,406 last Friday. Worldwide, the World Health Organization reported the number of confirmed cases in 215 countries Friday at 3.76 million, up from 3.67 million Thursday, 3.59 million Wednesday and 3.5 million Tuesday, and the death count was almost 259,600, up from 254,000 Thursday, 247,000 Wednesday and 243,000 Tuesday. The worldwide Coronavirus Dashboard (ncov2019.live/data) Friday reported the total number of cases at more than 3.98 million with 2.3 million active cases. The site reported more than 274,000 people have died and more than 1.37 million people have recovered.
