At students' service

Tiffin City Schools has served meals to students during the coronavirus closure. Initially, the plan called for distribution of a free cold sack lunch and breakfast every day of the school week for preK-12 at drop sites. The district modified the plan and now is distributing meals for Mondays and Tuesdays on Mondays and meals for Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays on Wednesdays. The change is to help with distancing and limiting the amount of contact, said Scott Daniel, the district's director of operations. Tiffin City Schools provided 146 meals to students on March 16. The number increased to 211 meals provided Friday. Daniel said last week went smoothly, and the district never had done a program like it. It was put together in a couple of days, he said. Daniel said Ohio Department of Education had provided a heads-up to think about how to feed children or what the district's plan would be. "Mr. Boes had me put this plan together," Daniel said. Robert Boes is serving as the district's interim superintendent. Food service workers are distributing food such as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, ham and turkey sandwiches, Pop-Tarts, apple sauce, juice, crackers and dried cranberries. They accommodate lunches and breakfasts. Students get their choice of milk, one for each meal, Daniel said. The meals meet government standards, said Colleen Halm, a food service worker. Students must be present to pick up their own meals. People had been appreciative, Daniel said. Daniel said there are four different routes, with four stops each. The routes are: Run No. 1: Siesta Drive, 11-11:15 a.m.; Krout 2-3, 11:30-11:45 a.m.; Ann and Main streets, noon-12:15 p.m.; and East Green, 12:30-12:45 p.m. Run No. 2: Willow Creek Apartments, 11-11:15 a.m.; Lincoln PreK, 11:30-11:45 a.m.; Dallas Street apartments, noon-12:15 p.m.; and Oakley Park, 12:30-12:45 p.m. Run No. 3: Noble 4-5, 11-11:15 a.m.; Applejack Park, 11:30-11:45 a.m.; Washington K-1, noon-12:15 p.m.; and West Junior High property, 12:30-12:45 p.m. Run No. 4: Tiffin Middle School, 11-11:15 a.m.; Duchess Lane and Morningside Drive, 11:30-11:45 a.m; Cottage Avenue, noon-12:15 p.m.; and Tiffin's bus garage, 12:30-12:45 p.m.
