High school students given opportunity to experience science at 'Berg

Heidelberg University's ACS — American Chemical Society — Chem Club is to host its inaugural High School Science Day on Feb. 29 for all area high school students interested in learning more about Heidelberg's science programs. Heidelberg seniors Caleb Fry, Club vice president and Katie Iwanek, Club president, helped organize the day's activities. Fry is majoring in bio-chemistry and Iwanek is majoring in biology. "Students will have an opportunity to delve in deeper and see what science programs Heidelberg has to offer," Fry said. The day will be broken up in different sessions presented by students and faculty members. "We want to show our strengths within the science department," Iwanek said. Some sessions include sport science, DNA extraction, cancer genetics, pure science in STEM, drones, combating false science, women in STEM, careers in science, and more. In addition to the sessions, there will be tours throughout the science department, including the cadaver lab and National Water Quality Lab. The day will also include a lunch break. During the event high school students will also have the opportunity to speak with current Heidelberg students about their experiences with college life. Fry said he himself had always enjoyed science and after his brother was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, he enjoyed figuring out how everything works. Iwanek said she always enjoyed science and had very inspiring science teacher throughout high school. "I wanted to continue to be more involved in the science department," she said. Fry said he wants students to see that science is more fun than people may think. "They can come and see our labs and get more hands-on experience" Fry said. "Science is not as intimidating," Iwanek said. Nathaniel Beres, professor of chemistry and chair of the department, said he wants to encourage high school students to explore the programs Heidelberg has to offer. "I want students to be aware of all the different possibilities they have here and to see what options they have within the science field," Beres said.
