OSS planning environment law, enforcement training day

Ottawa Sandusky Seneca Joint Solid Waste District is hosting a training session 8:45 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Jan. 24 called “Environmental Law/Enforcement Training: Environmental Concerns for Interest Groups.”

The session is to take place at Live Edge Center, Fremont.

The day begins with registration for law enforcement and court personnel, government agencies and public officials, and a welcome from Kathleen Rocco, OSS director.

One morning topic is “Investigating Criminal Environmental Enforcement Cases,” and speakers are Ken Mettler, manager of the Ohio EPA’s Special Investigation Unit; Allie Reynolds, investigator, Ohio EPA’s Special Investigation Unit; Lisa Matovic, special agent/team leader, US-EPA Criminal Investigative Division; Chris Wilson, special agent, US-EPA Criminal Investigative Division; Brent Kirkpatrick, special agent supervisor, Ohio BCI, Environmental Enforcement Unit; and David Wieging, special agent, Ohio BCI, Environmental Enforcement Unit.

The second morning topic is “A Prosecutor’s Perspective,” and is to be led by Sally Smetzer-Montell, supervising assistant attorney general, Environmental Enforcement Section – Criminal Prosecution Unit;

Ken Egbert, senior assistant attorney general, Environmental Enforcement Section – Criminal Prosecution Unit; and Brad Besson, assistant U.S. attorney, U.S. Attorney’s Office – Northern District of Ohio.

Starting at 1 p.m., the training is open to the general public and interest groups.

The first afternoon topic is meth lab training with Andrew Webb, special agent, Ohio BCI, Clandestine Lab and Marijuana Eradication Unit.

The second afternoon session is a review of environmental law and regulations for nonprofits and other interest groups.

The day will end with a question-and-answer session.

Rocco said she is working on getting the training approved for continuing education credits for various groups.

Lunch is included for people attending the morning session for $10 with advanced registration by check or invoice. Lunch might be available for cash with same-day registration.
