A Tiffin Police Department officer was honored for life-saving measures he took in June.

During Monday’s Tiffin City Council meeting, Officer Justin Nowak was honored with the law enforcement commendation medal through Sons of the American Revolution’s John Hancock Chapter.

In June, Nowak had gone through a burning porch on Wentz Street and in the front door, picked up Janice Chinell from her wheelchair and carried her out.

Nowak had been at the police station when 911 was called about 2 a.m. and was the first first-responder to arrive at the burning home.

Henry Stobbs, representing the Sons of the American Revolution organization, said it was a great privilege for several reasons to be at the meeting. He had taught Nowak, who graduated from Mohawk High School in 2007.

Stobbs said the medal rarely is awarded. It was the first in his seven years of involvement in the chapter that the group had given one.

“I am very proud to be bestowing this to him,” he said.
