Tiffin City School Board of Education President Dr. Andrew Gase (left) presents Columbian High School senior Joshua Fanning (right) with his 2020 National Merit Scholarship booklet notifying him he has been named a semifinalist for the scholarship. Fanning is the son of Barry and Suzanne Fanning (center).

Fanning is the second student from Columbian to be named a semifinalist, and the second in his family with his brother Kerrick Fanning earning the honor last year.

These academically-talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2020 will be announced in April. Recipients will join more than 345,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the merit scholar title.
