Rescue crews assist boaters

Rescue crews responded to two people and a pontoon boat on Sandusky River on Sunday night.

The incident originally was reported as a boat with two occupants who couldn’t get to land, according to Seneca County Sheriff’s Office.

Assistant Chief Chris Daniel of Bascom Joint Fire District said it occurred south of US 224.

“They were actually anchored off,” he said.

Daniel said the people were planning to camp on the river.

“They were fine,” he said.

The two people were taken to shore by another boater and evaluated by EMS personnel, he said.

The incident was reported about 8:50 p.m.

Personnel from Bascom EMS, Bascom Joint Fire District and the Echo unit responded.

The water rescue team was on standby, and a Seneca County Sheriff’s Office deputy had been headed to the scene.

Ohio Department of Natural Resources was contacted and disregarded, according to the sheriff’s office.
